LACOE provides specialized instruction and community-based programs for youth who may not be well-served by traditional schools - this includes juvenile offenders, expelled and truant students, and those at risk of dropping out. Our focus is on creating supportive learning environments where all students can achieve academic, behavior and career goals.

County community schools are operated by LACOE in response to school district needs, and they serve students from the surrounding area who would normally attend local schools. They provide an educational placement for students who are expelled from their regular schools, are on probation, are experiencing homelessness or face other issues that affect their ability to succeed in school. Parents or guardians also may request that their child attend a county community school.
These programs help promote community safety by providing structured educational activities for at-promise youth, including after-school programs — keeping students positively engaged during the peak hours when juvenile crime may occur.
County community schools offer:
- fully accredited academic curriculum that can lead to a high school diploma
- at least 240 minutes of instruction daily, allowing students to earn extra credits toward graduation
- low student-to-teacher ratio
- individualized learning plans that set academic and behavior goals
- preparation for standardized tests
- structured after-school activities
- community partnerships for enrichment and employment opportunities
LACOE currently operates 7 community schools countywide:
- Boys Republic (Monrovia)
- Mujeres y Hombres Nobles (Monterey Park)
- Jonas Salk (Hawthorne)
Independent study is an alternative to classroom instruction consistent with a local education agency's (LEA or district) course of study and aligned with State content standards.
This can be an important option for students who cannot access other education options because of work or family obligations. Students meet at least one hour per week with a teacher for tutoring, counseling and instruction. Additionally, student work at home on an individualized plan tailored to meet academic needs and career goals.
California’s public school funding system requires education agencies to engage stakeholders in developing a plan for how it will use revenue to support student achievement.
