Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports

A prevention-oriented approach for schools to utilize evidence-based interventions to improve academic and social outcomes for students.

LACOE PBIS Unit Statement of Purpose

The LACOE PBIS Unit is committed to building the capacity of educational organizations by using data to support their development of systems and practices that promote equitable social, emotional, behavioral, and academic outcomes for each student. We provide training, coaching, and technical assistance to guide partners to make data-based decisions informed by a research-based PBIS implementation framework.

PBIS is a customized approach to organize behavioral interventions into a Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) to maximize academic and social behavior outcomes for students. The fundamental purpose of PBIS is to make schools more effective, efficient, and equitable learning environments for all students.

The LACOE PBIS Unit training program aligns with the National Technical Assistance Center for PBIS. We use a Train-the-Trainer Model with districtwide systematic implementation as the final outcome.

Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is an evidence-based, tiered framework for supporting students’ behavioral, academic, social, emotional, and mental health. When implemented with fidelity, PBIS improves social emotional competence, academic success, and school climate. It also improves teacher health and wellbeing. It is a way to create positive, predictable, equitable and safe learning environments where everyone thrives. We use ‘students’ to refer to all children and youth in any educational or therapeutic setting (e.g., K-12 school, early childhood program, treatment program, juvenile justice program). Learn more about PBIS in schoolsclassroomsearly childhood programs and juvenile justice programs on those topic pages. (pbis.org)

TESTIMONIALS

"PBIS changed our approach to addressing the needs of students. We are more knowledgeable about establishing a culture that encourages all students to succeed".
–Dr. Kavin Dotson, District PBIS Coach, Lynwood USD

“El Rancho Unified School District is on our way to full district-wide PBIS implementation. Since applying PBIS, we can see a significant difference in the positive attitude in both adults and students on each campus. Each school has personalized their focus and adopted a “new” way of looking at school discipline.”
–Lorraine Jimenez, District PBIS Coach, El Rancho USD

“In the Glendale Unified School District, PBIS is a key feature of our MTSS and LCAP. In our first four years, GUSD's PBIS implementation has grown from 5 schools to 26, from elementary all the way through high school, and within our first five years will include all of our schools and positively impact each and every one of our students. GUSD is a PBIS District.
–Craig Lewis, District PBIS Coach, Glendale USD

“The Torrance Unified School District (TUSD) has invested in PBIS for the past two years and the results have been outstanding! The challenging conversations about how behavior impacts learning and the importance of how we, as adults, respond to behavior, has dramatically and positively impacted our practice. All elementary, middle, and continuation schools in TUSD are being trained by the exceptional PBIS team from LACOE, and we are grateful for their expertise, guidance, and support!”
–Jon Pearson, District PBIS Coach, Torrance USD

“Utilizing a MTSS that includes PBIS has given our administrators and teachers the necessary tools to make a positive difference in students' lives, and we have the data to prove it!”
–Diane D’Elia, District PBIS Coach, Saugus SD
