Great ShakeOut Earthquake Drill
Fri Oct 04 14:10:00 PDT 2024
Whether you're in a classroom, office or at home, taking a few minutes to practice earthquake safety can make a big difference.
On October 17, we're all invited to participate in the Great ShakeOut Drill to practice earthquake safety.
With earthquakes an inevitable part of Southern California’s future, we must be prepared to act quickly to ensure that disasters do not become catastrophes.
LACOE has partnered with the Earthquake Country Alliance in promoting the Great California ShakeOut, a massive earthquake drill to be held at 10:17 a.m. on October 17, 2024.
Whether you're in a classroom, office or at home, taking a few minutes to practice earthquake safety can make a big difference. It's a great opportunity to learn or refresh your knowledge on:
- DROP, COVER, and HOLD ON: The safest position to be in during an earthquake.
- Emergency preparedness: Having a disaster kit ready can help you and your loved ones stay safe and comfortable in case of an emergency.
- Evacuation routes: Knowing where to go and how to get there during an earthquake can help prevent injuries.
Tips During an Earthquake
· During an earthquake, drop to the floor, take cover under a sturdy desk or table, and hold on to it firmly. Be prepared to move with it until the shaking stops.
· If you are not near a desk or table, drop to the floor against the interior wall and protect your head and neck with your arms.
· Avoid exterior walls, windows, hanging objects, mirrors, tall furniture, large appliances and kitchen cabinets with heavy objects or glass.
· Do not go outside until it is safe to do so.
Let's come together as a community and show our commitment to earthquake safety. By participating in the Great ShakeOut Drill, we can be better prepared to face any challenges that may come our way.
Join us on October 17 and let's shake it out together!
