Mark Keppel High School and Alhambra High School, both from the Alhambra Unified School District, are headed to compete in the U.S. Academic Decathlon.

Two Los Angeles County high schools have both secured spots in the United States Academic Decathlon National Competition, marking the first time two teams from L.A. County will compete at the national stage simultaneously.

Mark Keppel High School and Alhambra High School, both from the Alhambra Unified School District, earned their national berths after exceptional performances at the California Academic Decathlon, held in Santa Clara, California. Mark Keppel High School earned third place and Alhambra High School claimed fourth place in the state competition. In a spectacular additional achievement, Alhambra High School dominated the Super Quiz competition, showcasing the stellar talent of L.A. County's students.

"We are incredibly proud of these outstanding students," said Dr. Debra Duardo, Los Angeles County Superintendent of Schools. " They are not just academic achievers; they are future leaders who will tackle complex global challenges with intellect, creativity and dedication. Their achievement showcases the remarkable educational opportunities and rigorous academic programs in our county."

Dr. Denise Jaramillo, Alhambra Unified School District’s Superintendent, expressed her excitement: "Our students and coaches have worked tirelessly, showing incredible intellectual depth and teamwork. Reaching the national competition is a testament to their hard work, passion for learning and collaborative spirit."

The Academic Decathlon is far more than just a competition—it's an incredible academic journey that challenges students to push beyond their intellectual boundaries. This year, teams from across the country will converge in Des Moines, Iowa, with dozens of schools competing for national honors, tackling the thought-provoking theme "Our Changing Climate." The competition goes beyond traditional academic testing, offering students a unique opportunity to develop critical thinking, public speaking, and teamwork skills that are crucial for personal and academic success.

The U.S. Academic Decathlon will take place from May 1-3, where California will be represented by eight teams, with Mark Keppel and Alhambra High Schools leading the way from Los Angeles County.

The schools are currently fundraising to support their trip to the U.S. Academic Decathlon. Community members interested in supporting these students can make donations through the Alhambra Unified School District.
