All high school students will need to complete an ethnic studies course to graduate by the 2029–30 school year.

The Los Angeles County Office of Education (LACOE) is releasing a comprehensive Ethnic Studies video series to support California school districts in meeting the requirements of Assembly Bill 101(AB 101). Funded by Project CRESC, led by San Diego County Office of Education (SDCOE) and also in partnership with Riverside County Office of Education (RCOE), LACOE's video series includes corresponding resource materials to assist teachers and administrators as they prepare to offer ethnic studies courses. This innovative resource is a joint effort across multiple counties, showcasing a collaborative commitment to advancing the education of all California students through culturally relevant and inclusive coursework.

Starting with the Class of 2029-30, AB 101 requires all high school students to complete an ethnic studies course in order to graduate. To support schools in this effort, local education agencies (LEAs), including charter schools, must start offering these courses by the 2025–26 school year. With a focus on practical support and educational excellence, this video series provides valuable guidance for teachers as they build their curricula to meet both state standards and the unique needs of their students.

“This video series represents the collective commitment of educators and leaders across counties working together to ensure that every student in California has access to an equitable education that embraces diversity and inclusivity,” said Dr. Debra Duardo, Los Angeles County Superintendent of Schools.

Key Features of the Ethnic Studies Video Series

The series offers ready-to-use resources and supplemental materials aligned with California Department of Education standards, making it easier for teachers to develop courses that meet the AB 101 requirements. Key components include:

  • Resource for Educators: A comprehensive collection of videos and materials, allowing educators to start preparing for the 2025–26 requirement today.
  • Cultural Relevance: Content that helps foster critical thinking, cultural understanding, and inclusivity in the classroom.
  • Aligned with State Standards: Materials developed to align directly with state guidelines, ensuring a clear pathway for implementing courses that satisfy California’s educational standards.

In addition to the video series, professional development opportunities will be available to further support educators and administrators as they work to fulfill the ethnic studies mandate.
