On Tuesday, June 25, the Los Angeles County Office of Education Greater Avenues for Independence (LACOE GAIN) program celebrated 83 graduates who completed their High School Equivalency (HSE).

The ceremony showcased graduates who successfully balanced personal responsibilities with their educational goals while starting new chapters in their lives.

Perla Montes, a Palmdale HSE graduate, described how the program helped her earn her high school equivalency, complete a short-term training (STT), and secure her current job as a certified nursing assistant (CNA). Montes highlighted her desire to inspire her children by being a role model to them and credited LACOE GAIN in providing her with new opportunities through both education and vocational training.  

Genesis Hendricks, from Airport HSE, called her return to education a transformative decision for her future. Motivated by a tragic loss of a friend due to medical neglect, Hendricks highlighted the disproportionate mortality rates among Black and brown women in childbirth and shared her plan to pursue becoming a certified nurse midwife to address healthcare disparities.

Dr. Debra Duardo, Los Angeles County Superintendent of Schools, congratulated the graduates, sharing her journey from leaving high school early to becoming an educational leader. She encouraged the graduates to pursue their aspirations boldly, emphasizing the importance of following personal goals over societal expectations.

Martin Evans, CDP Manager of LACOE GAIN Division, addressed the graduates, stating, “You are embarking on a new journey in your lives, and today's achievements stand as a testament to your resilience and determination.”  

As the ceremony concluded, the graduates stood ready to embrace their futures, their accomplishments shining as examples of perseverance and the transformative impact of education.
