Through mentorship, advocacy and a powerful sense of community, the Women's Leadership Conference fuels leadership and empowerment for women in education.

The Los Angeles County Office of Education (LACOE) kicked off Women’s History Month with the Women’s Leadership and Empowerment Conference at Almansor Court. This year’s theme, "EmpowerED: Women Leading the Future in Education," celebrated solidarity, leadership and the ongoing pursuit of gender equality in education.

The conference brought together women and allies for a day of thought-provoking discussions, interactive workshops and inspiring keynote speeches. Attendees gained valuable insights from visionary leaders who shared their experiences, strategies for success and perspectives on overcoming challenges in education.

Distinguished speakers included LACOE’s Deputy Superintendent Dr. Ruth Pérez, El Monte City School District Superintendent Dr. Maribel Garcia, Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District Superintendent Dr. Natasha Baker, USC’s Dr. Maria Ott, LACOE’s Chief Education Officer Dr. Maricela Ramirez and members of LAUSD’s Information Technology Team—Mary Lu Camacho, Carla Barrera-Ortiz, Stacey Ellis and Patricia O. They explored topics such as leadership development, career advancement, work-life balance and authenticity in the workplace.

Workshops focused on key themes, including mentorship, communication strategies, inspiring the next generation and overcoming adversity.

A highlight of the event was the keynote address by Merlyna Valentine, a former teacher and principal who captivated the audience with her powerful story. After suddenly losing all four limbs, she transformed her adversity into a message of resilience, gratitude and purpose. Her moving speech earned a standing ovation and left attendees deeply inspired.

Los Angeles County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Debra Duardo emphasized the importance of women empowering one another. She shared a personal story about attending her son's "mother-son dance" and she purposefully invited the women who helped raise her son—her mother, sisters and daughters—illustrating the profound impact of community, togetherness and support.

Now in its third year, LACOE’s Women’s Leadership and Empowerment Conference has grown significantly, with increasing attendance, a surge in workshop participation and sold-out tickets. The event’s success highlights the vital need for spaces that champion women’s leadership in education, leaving attendees inspired and empowered to create lasting change.
