Under Dr. Jaramillo’s leadership, AUSD has made significant strides in equity, inclusion and student engagement.
Dr. Denise Jaramillo, Superintendent of the Alhambra Unified School District (AUSD), has been honored with the prestigious 2024 Los Angeles County Superintendent of the Year award. This recognition highlights her exceptional leadership, dedication to student success and commitment to fostering a positive and inclusive learning environment. Los Angeles County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Debra Duardo surprised Dr. Jaramillo with the award at a district wide principals’ meeting this morning.
Dr. Jaramillo’s career has come full circle, beginning as a student at Mark Keppel High School in AUSD and culminating in her current role as superintendent. With 37 years of experience in the district, she has consistently guided AUSD with compassion, equity and an unwavering belief in the potential of every student.
Her leadership has been marked by innovative solutions, strong relationships with labor organizations, and a deep commitment to student well-being. Dr. Jaramillo has successfully navigated challenges, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, by prioritizing staff and student needs and fostering a sense of community. During the pandemic, Dr. Jaramillo partnered with community organizations and leaders to provide food services and wifi mobile hotspots for students, a food pantry for families and COVID immunizations for staff and students through mobile drive-thru at AUSD schools.
Under Dr. Jaramillo’s leadership, AUSD has made significant strides in equity, inclusion and student engagement. She spearheaded AUSD’s efforts to ensure student voices are part of the decision-making process by adding a student board member and establishing a Student Advisory Council in 2023-24. She actively mentors students in leadership roles, encouraging them to engage in meaningful dialogue with district leaders and community stakeholders. Dr. Jaramillo has championed initiatives to ensure student voices are heard, advocated for Site Equity Teams and fostered partnerships with community organizations.
“Dr. Jaramillo is a true visionary who has transformed AUSD into a thriving district,” said Dr. Debra Duardo. “She brings a blend of expertise, empathy and forward-thinking solutions to every challenge she faces. Her commitment to ensuring that all students and staff feel valued and heard is truly inspiring.”
Dr. Jaramillo’s accomplishments have earned her recognition from various organizations, including the Alhambra Educational Foundation, Alhambra Latino Association, Congressmember Judy Chu and ACSA Region 15.
“I am deeply honored and humbled by this recognition. But it is truly a reflection of the hard work and dedication of so many people in the AUSD community,” said Dr. Denise Jaramillo, who was shocked when she was surprised with this award today. “Everyday, I am blessed to work with an amazing team that focuses on what is best for students, families, and employees. With their collaboration, innovation, and commitment to equity in education, AUSD is working together to create a positive and inclusive learning environment for each and every student.”
Dr. Jaramillo’s leadership has had a profound impact on AUSD, and her recognition as Los Angeles County Superintendent of the Year is a testament to her exceptional contributions to education.
The Los Angeles County Superintendent of the Year award was introduced in 2017 by the Los Angeles County Office of Education in recognition of leadership in learning, excellence in communication and dedicated community involvement. Dr. Jaramillo will be honored at the L.A. County State of Education Celebration and Superintendents' Professional Collaborative Conference on Thursday, Nov. 7, at the Queen Mary in Long Beach.
