Staff enjoyed a deeper understanding of Cinco de Mayo celebrations and history while raising money for college scholarships for Los Angeles County students.
Our Cinco de Mayo celebration, hosted by our Hispanic Heritage/Latinx Equity and Social Justice Team Committee, was a huge success! The theme was “Taking Back the Cinco de Mayo”, and attendees enjoyed a delightful array of Tamales, Mexican candies, and chips and salsa, all while immersing themselves in the rich history and significance of this important holiday. Proceeds from the Tamales sales went directly towards college scholarship opportunities for Los Angeles County students.
The team shared a fascinating look into the history of Cinco de Mayo, dispelling myths and clarifying its true meaning beyond being mistaken for Mexican Independence Day. Attendees learned about the Battle of Puebla, where the Mexican army's victory over the French is commemorated, and gained insights into the cultural differences in how the holiday is celebrated in the USA versus Mexico.
Thank you to the Hispanic Heritage/Latinx Equity and Social Justice Team Committee for organizing such a memorable and educational event! We look forward to future celebrations that continue to showcase the diversity and unity within LACOE.
