"As state educational leaders, it is our duty to represent the values and diversity of our students, to make sure all of our students can identify with what they are learning, and see themselves in the instructional program and materials presented to them in our classrooms across the state. I know for me growing up Chicana, it was rare that I saw Mexican Americans portrayed or celebrated for how our families contributed to this country. I’m proud of California for making it clear that our priority is to do what is right for our students, by reflecting the diverse experiences and perspectives of Californians in our schools."
