LA County High Schools Earn High Honors in State Academic Decathlon Competition

After three years of virtual competition, the California Academic Decathlon returned in person this year as high schools from throughout California.

Three LA County schools earned superlative honors in the 2023 California Academic Decathlon competition including Mark Keppel High School from Alhambra Unified School District, winning 4th place overall, West High School from Torrance Unified School District, winning 7th place overall and El Rancho High School from El Rancho Unified School District, earning 3rd place in division 2 for Super Quiz.  

Fifty-nine high schools took part in the competition including 10 teams representing LA County, the most of any County participating in the event. This year’s California Academic Decathlon was won by El Camino Real Charter High School and they will move on to the national competition being held in April in Texas.

"Congratulations to our dedicated students and wonderful coaches who represented LA County in this year’s state competition. Their studious training and teamwork secured them a spot at the prestigious state level where they earned well-deserved honors. I’m so proud of them for their dedication and hard work,” said Dr. Debra Duardo, Los Angeles County Superintendent of Schools.

Teams from LA County qualified for the state competition by taking part in the 41st Annual Los Angeles County Academic Decathlon held in January and February, which was won by Mark Keppel High School for the fourth consecutive year. 

The LA County schools participating in the statewide competition included:

  • Redondo Union (Redondo Beach USD) 
  • PV Peninsula (Palos Verdes Peninsula USD) 
  • North (Torrance USD)   
  • El Rancho (El Rancho USD) 
  • Beverly Hills (Beverly Hills USD) 
  • South (Torrance USD)  
  • South El Monte (El Monte USD)
