Applicant Resources

To ensure that the Los Angeles County Office of Education employs highly qualified and diverse staff, the Office of the Personnel Commission uses a variety of tests in the recruitment and selection process.

We strive to provide fair and transparent experiences for all eligible candidates according to Merit System principles and industry best-practices. The selection process, although thorough, allows for succesful candidates to be eligible for job offers for up to 12 months.

The Test Catalog and Training Resources below contain a list of several testing methods we use to measure candidates’ job fitness in the selection process as well as short training videos to help you prepare for exams.

A T&E is a scored evaluation of job application materials submitted by a candidate. Scoring is done by qualified raters who have experience in the job field. The materials evaluated may include the application and question responses. The T&E is a method for determining the best-qualified candidates among those who have shown that they meet the minimum requirements.

A multiple-choice exam evaluates how prepared a candidate is for the job duties and responsibilities of a job by measuring specific knowledge areas that are important to the job such as knowledge of the industry, equipment, safety rules, and regulations.

THE SELECTION PROCESS

Visit our Current Opportunities page to view current job openings and apply.

Don’t see a position you are interested in? Submit a Job Interest Card and be notified when a recruitment opens.

In your application provide specific details about the duties you performed in each of your previous and current position(s), provide full responses to the supplemental questionnaire, and attach proof of education. Education documents can also be uploaded to your School Jobs profile at a later date. Once submitted, an application can’t be edited, but you can submit a new application any time before the filing deadline. Only your most recent application will be used in evaluating your qualifications.

Personnel Commission staff will always notify you of the status of your application at each step of the process, from the moment your application is reviewed to your score on each exam part, even if you are unsuccessful. Everyone who meets the minimum qualifications will be invited to participate in the examination. The timeline for each recruitment can vary depending on the number of test parts and the size of the applicant pool.

Be sure to monitor your emails regularly for notifications including your spam and junk folders.

Each of the various exam types listed in the Test Catalog are designed to measure competencies that are directly related to the job. Competencies are behavioral categories, qualities, and characteristics that enable one to work successfully and efficiently. Review the Job Description for the specific competencies identified as being most critical to the job.

You will receive an email notifying you of your rank on the eligibility list. All candidates who are successful in the exam process will be placed on the eligibility list and their names will be forwarded to the hiring department for consideration. The hiring department may interview and select candidates from the top three ranks and will move down the list as ranks are exhausted.

If you're not selected, your name will typically remain on the list for up to 12 months and you may be contacted for future vacancies.

Once you’ve accepted a job offer, you will be contacted by the Human Resources Services division for pre-employment processing. For this process you will be asked to complete LACOE’s Mandated Reporter training, provide results of a recent TB test, report for an onboarding appointment which will include finger printing, and a start date will be set only after successfully passing a background check.

Whether you are successful or unsuccessful in an exam, the review process allows for candidates to request more information regarding their score in the exam including reviewing comments from an interview panel.

To learn more about your performance in an exam you can reach out to the analyst in charge of the recruitment and request to schedule a review. The analyst may not able to share specific details or information regarding right/wrong answers, but may help you identify the areas in which you did well as well as areas that may need improvement.

To protest an examination result, one or more of the following conditions must be cited: design or content error, procedural error, scoring error, abuse of discretion or bias, or illegal discrimination. Disagreement with the result or belief that the score is not an accurate representation of one’s qualifications is not, in itself, a basis for protest or appeal. To be considered, requests for protests must be submitted to the Office of Personnel Commission within six (6) days of the results notifications.

For more information regarding the appeal process, please refer to the Reviews, Protests, and Appeals document or contact the analyst in charge of the recruitment.
